Ailment: BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Remedy: Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto (serenoa repens, sabal serrulatum) is a 2-4 m (3-6 ft) fan palm native to the USA, mostly along the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal plains. It is a strong plant, extremely slow growing, and long lived, with some plants, especially in Florida, being as old as 500-700 years. It produces fruits that are crushed and used as a medicinal herb, or to make a tea.

Saw Palmetto is an ingredient in many medicines/pills sold for prostate enlargement control. It was first recommended to me by the President of a prostate research group. I've used it for years and found it beneficial, but it's no cure.

A few years ago, around the age of 50, I noticed that I did not pee as strongly as I used to. At the time, a friend had mentioned to me that he was using a tea made from saw palmetto to help with an enlarged prostate. He was getting up every couple of hours during the night to urinate, and the lack of unbroken sleep and the weakness in urine flow was getting him down. Apparently a saw palmetto tea had made a dramatic difference after a couple of weeks. I decided to try the tea, more as a preventative. Found some crushed saw palmetto fruits at the herbal stall at a local market - like hard chips. I started drinking a tea every day. I felt good, though did not particularly like the taste of the tea. My urine flow did improve.
