Ailment: Psychological problems
Remedy: 5-HTP
5-HTP is also known as 5-Hydroxytryptophan or oxitriptan. It is a naturally-occurring amino acid, but is not found in food in any significant quantities. It is available as an over-the-counter supplement in 50 mg or 100 mg capsules, and is usually made from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia.
5-HTP helps the body to produce serotonin and melatonin. It makes them using tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey, milk, potatoes, pumpkin, and various greens. Serotonin and melatonin are neurotransmitters, and their lack is a contributing factor in depression and other diseases.
It is sold as a supplement for the treatment of depression, as an appetite suppressant, and a sleep aid.
