Intestinal permeability
Leaky gut
Leaky gut is the name for intestinal or bowel hyperpermeability. The intestine's epithelial cells are disrupted, leading to an imbalance of colonic microbes, a leaky intestinal mucosal barrier, and an intestinal immune response / inflammation. A leaky bowel wall may let bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, partly digested foods, endotoxins and other contents in the colon through to the bloodstream. If the same foods repeatedly assail the immune system, it tends to cause allergy or intolerance to those foods.
Leaky gut has been associated with many acute and chronic diseases such as inflammation of the liver, cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), type-1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, various allergies, asthma, and autism.
