Warts

Warts are dry crusty skin lesions caused by an infectious virus. The most common wart is a small, hard, rough bump on the hands and fingers, often in clusters. Warts can occur anywhere on the body, including the genitals where they can be sexually transmitted. A verruca is a plantar wart (a wart on the sole of the foot).

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus. About half the population of children have them at some time. Warts appear about 1-8 months after infection and can last for years if not treated.

Plantar warts are often acquired when walking barefooted on communal surfaces such as public swimming pools, locker rooms and showers. The virus can enter through the smallest scratch or lesion on the skin. To minimise the chance of infection wear rubber thongs in such areas, and avoid sharing towels and bath mats.

Warts are completely different to corns or calluses (see Ailments).
