I travelled from Australia to Plovdiv in Bulgaria. It was a long trip, 20 hours door to door sitting in cramped aircraft seats, buses and a train. The day after I arrived, I notice that both my feet were very swollen, and the swelling was around my ankles too. I have never had anything like this before and it was quite an alarming look.
I lay down and raised my feet under a pillow, and even lifted my feet up and wiggled them. It helped a little but clearly was not going to solve the problem too soon.
Then I remembered that my urine was really dark-coloured while I was travelling and also at that time, so I decided to start drinking lots of water. After increasing my water intake, my ankles rapidly went back to normal.
The inside of a jet is a very dry environment and the cabin crew give you totally insufficient water. My feeling is that the swelling in your legs and ankles is not only caused by the sitting for long periods, but also the dehydration.
