I am 67 and I was getting bad cramps at night on a regular basis and when driving. Medical tests revealed no problems. I finally realised that I had been overzealous in cutting back my salt intake and I was ingesting no salt at all. Too much will kill you, but a little bit of salt is necessary to the body. I believe the recommended amount is up to 5 grams per day and as I do not eat bread and I don't add salt to cooking most of the time, I was not getting anything like that much. I started adding moderate amounts to my food and now the problem is almost gone. No more cramping at night.
