Black eye
A black eye is a bruise that develops around the eye, usually after a direct blow or injury to the eye or socket. The skin around the eyes is delicate and easily bruised. Within minutes after an injury, swelling, tenderness and bleeding can occur under the skin. Over the next few days, the eyelids and surrounding area can turn bluish black, then purple, and lastly a yellow colour as the bruise heals. Mostly black eyes heal within 10-15 days
- *** The most important thing with trauma injuries is to apply ice as soon as possible. The sooner you can do it, the less pain and blackening you will have, and the quicker it will heal. Gently apply an ice pack for 5-10 minutes to the injured area. Take care not to apply direct pressure to the eye itself. Repeat every 2 - 3 hours during the first day (or two days if there is swelling) after the injury
- After the swelling goes down, use a warm compress to relieve pain and speed healing
- When sleeping use a pillow to raise the head to reduce swelling
- Try not to blow your nose hard as it can increase swelling around the eye
See a doctor if you:
- Lost consciousness, even for a short time
- Have blurred or double vision or cannot see clearly
- Have a headache or severe pain
- The eye or lid is injured
- The injury is not healing after a few days, or becomes hot, swollen or has a pus discharge (infection)
